What
to expect during your exam:

Going
to the doctor can be a traumatic experience, especially when it's concerning
one's eyes. Our physicians and staff want you to feel at ease. Please
never hesitate to ask any questions you may have.
Your care is our number one priority!
If coming
for a complete eye exam, plan on being in our office for about an hour.
If bringing a child age ten and under, plan on being in our office about
an hour and a half. Please bring all insurance information and referral
forms. Please bring any medications or a list of any medications you
are currently taking. It is also a good idea to write down any specific
questions you may have so that we will be able to answer them for you.
Please understand that emergencies sometimes happen which the doctor
may need to attend to.
Dilating
Drops:
In
order to give your eyes a thorough examination, dilating drops will
given. This permits examination of interior structures of your eyes
(lens, optic nerve, retina). Children are also dilated to allow for
accurate examination of refractive error. While not uncomfortable, there
are some side effects that we would like you to be aware of:
Photosensitivity
: This is the most common side effect. Since your pupil is dilated,
more light will be able to enter your eye. Going outside your pupil
will be unable to constrict in the brighter light. Wearing dark sunglasses
will make going outside more comfortable. If you forget your sunglasses
or don't have any, we have disposable ones available at the reception
desk.
Blurry
Vision : Some patients (especially young people) may experience a short
term blurring of their near vision. The dilating drops also paralyze
your eye's ability to focus up close. For young patients it is important
for us to do this so that we may accurately determine refractive error.
For adults, this blurring of vision makes your exam for glasses more
accurate as well. With your eye muscles relaxed, you can't strain your
eyes while reading the chart.
Duration
: For most patients the duration of the drops is approximately three
hours. For children the duration is approximately six to eight hours.
For some patients the drops can last longer then the stated times, this
is especially true for individuals with light colored eyes. Lighter
colored eyes have less pigment, which can block the effect of the dilating
drops.
You will be able to drive after your exam. If you would feel more comfortable,
bring someone to drive you.
