What to expect during your exam:
Going to the doctor can be a traumatic experience, especially when it's concerning one's eyes. Our physicians and staff want you to feel at ease. Please never hesitate to ask any questions you may have.
Your care is our number one priority!

Items to bring with you:

  • All insurance cards and referral forms.
  • A complete list of any medications you are currently taking.
  • If necessary, a list with any health conditions you have been diagnosed with and surgical procedures or illnesses you have had, even if you feel it’s unrelated to your eyes.
  • Any glasses you are currently using, including prescription sunglasses.
If coming for a complete eye exam, plan on being in our office for about an hour and a half. If bringing a child age ten and under, plan on being in our office about two hours.  In most cases, you will see a technician first.  They will go through purpose of your visit, your health history, and the preliminary testing before you see the doctor.
It is also a good idea to write down any specific questions you may have so that we will be able to answer them for you.

    Dilating Drops:
In order to give your eyes a thorough examination, dilating drops will be given. This permits examination of interior structures of your eyes (lens, optic nerve, retina). Children are also dilated to allow for accurate examination of refractive error. While not uncomfortable, there are some side effects that we would like you to be aware of:

Photosensitivity: This is the most common side effect. Since your pupil is dilated, more light will be able to enter your eye.  Outside, your pupil will be unable to constrict in the brighter light. Wearing dark sunglasses will make going outside more comfortable. If you forget your sunglasses or don't have any, we have disposable ones available at the reception desk.

Blurry Vision: Some patients experience a short term blurring of their vision. The dilating drops also paralyze your eye's ability to focus up close.

Duration: For most patients the duration of the drops is approximately three hours. For children the duration may be approximately six to eight hours. For some patients the drops can last longer then the stated times, this is especially true for individuals with light colored eyes. Lighter colored eyes have less pigment, which can block the effect of the dilating drops.

Most patients are able to drive after your exam. If you would feel more comfortable, bring someone to drive you.

    Insurance Coverage
Arleo Eye Associates participates with most major insurance plans.
Some insurance plans require a referral from your primary care physician in order to schedule an appointment with us. Check with your primary care physician and/or insurance company to see if this is necessary.
If you have specific questions regarding insurance or billing, please call 607-257-5599 8am-5pm Monday through Friday and ask to speak to the billing office.  However, due to the large variation in plans and coverage, we encourage you to communicate with your insurance carrier and be familiar with your plan.
